Golf is a sport that celebrates the expansive outdoors, making efficient use of space. When we delve into the realm of golf course lighting, it extends beyond simply illuminating golfers' movements and tracing the path of the ball as it lands on the turf. The utmost priority lies in achieving uniform, unobtrusive lighting that blankets the upper expanse of the course while avoiding the creation of unwelcome shadows.
Consequently, an exacting approach to lighting planning becomes indispensable for upholding unwavering brilliance and consistency across golf courses and driving ranges. The requisites for illuminating golf courses deviate substantially from those governing other sporting venues, given their unique characteristics. Golf courses sprawl expansively, often dwarfing the size of conventional sports fields, and are intricately sectioned into numerous fairways. The undulating terrain and changing topography of these fairways present distinctive challenges when it comes to situating light poles, selecting the appropriate light sources, and directing light beams. Such intricacies underscore the demand for a specialized and sophisticated design strategy.
The LED golf course lighting design must cater to the diverse functions of a golf course, accommodating the variations in terrain and obstacles across the path, including tees, fairways, and greens. Given the range in fairway lengths and the presence of obstacles such as bunkers, pools, bridges, slopes, hills, long grass areas, and ball lanes, the lighting should ensure uniform illumination across the entire course.
In order to achieve this, LED stadium flood lighting with one or more large-area light sources or multiple small light sources from different directions should be employed. The goal is to create soft, visually pleasing illumination without causing glare. Special attention must be given to areas such as bunkers, water obstacles, and long grass areas, which pose challenges according to the "Golf Rules."
Night lighting should not only facilitate gameplay but also enhance the excitement and challenge of night golf, contributing to a memorable and enjoyable experience for golfers.
In addressing lighting layout challenges, specific attention should be paid to the potential obstruction of light in areas with obstacles like trees and shrubs. In the teeing area, light poles should be positioned a minimum of 2m behind and centered, preventing player shadows from obstructing the ball. The installation height of golf course lights should be at least 10m or half the length of the illuminated teeing area, with the option of using multiple light poles for longer tees. It is crucial to ensure that the placement of light poles in front does not impede the visibility of the teeing platform.
For the light poles on the tee box, a minimum height of 12m, preferably 15m, is required, with placement directly behind or behind the tee table. Additional light poles may be necessary for particularly long tee tables to provide adequate lighting. Consideration should be given to reducing shadows for left (right) hand golfers by placing light poles strategically. The positioning of light poles near the tee screen should prioritize the right side of the tee, and when close to the golf lane, poles should be arranged on the outside to avoid interference with the hitting line.
Two design options are proposed based on lighting standards:
1. Standard Design (Economical): The main tee receives the highest illuminance, with other tees adopting lower illuminance. A light pole is installed 5-7m behind the main tee, and additional poles follow fairway lighting principles.
2. High Standard Design (Luxury): Both the main tee and other tees adhere to the same maximum illuminance standards. Each tee ground is illuminated by a separate light pole, placed 5-7m away, even with a 20-30m distance between poles. The area after the last tee follows standard fairway pole layout principles.
Consider stadium lighting requirements during golf course lighting design to avoid reactive approaches after the main stadium structure is completed.
When placing lighting poles, minimize glare for golfers by carefully considering the projection direction about adjacent fairways, reducing discomfort caused by direct glare.
Select lights with IP65/IK09 protection and Class I electric shock protection, accounting for outdoor installation challenges and considering anti-corrosion performance based on local atmospheric conditions.
